UnLearning Lightbulb: Race on the Intersection with Dr Marie Stewart

26 October @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Free

UnLearning Lightbulb sessions are intended to encourage racial literacy and the ability to recognise, respond and counter racism in our community. ARU is committed to fostering an inclusive culture, promoting equality, valuing diversity within a supportive working, learning and social environment for all students and staff.

The Unlearning sessions offer an opportunity to become more aware of the power structures within which we live and work so that we can begin to unlearn deep-rooted beliefs that perpetuate racism.

The sessions include reference to lived experience of racism and racialised harassment.

Join Dr Marie Stewart as we explore race on the intersection.

Dr Marie Stewart is the Director of Taylor-Stewart Associates, consultants in Diversity/Equality and Inclusion and the management of change.

·        She has more than 30 years’ experience across the full range of protected characteristics – to promote effective individual and organizational development.

·        Educated to A-level in Jamaica, she has qualifications in Education, Psychology and Sociology from the University of London.

·        She was appointed MBE for services to education, diversity and equal opportunities

·        She was an Adviser for the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry, analysing the institutional racism in the Metropolitan Police.

Given the sensitive nature of the topics we will be covering, and inspired by the ARU Inclusivity Reading Group, we offer the following ground rules:

Be willing to acknowledge that racism, sexism, and other forms of oppression exist.

Recognise that we all have different starting points in learning about racism and structures of oppression. No one is expected to be an expert. People at all points of the learning journey are welcome.

Practice empathetic listening.

There is no pressure to speak or to share your lived experience.
